About Us

Whitmore Marine & Shipping was founded in 1974 by Captain Harold “Hal” Whitmore. After 25 years at sea, the last eleven as a master on Gulf Coast freighters, Capt. Whitmore came ashore and opened a small ship agency office on Water Street in downtown Mobile with one secretary and a telex machine.

In 1981 the company bought its first vessel, a small coastal freighter which Capt. Whitmore renamed Gulf Pioneer, and began carrying cargo to Puerto Cortés, Honduras. Customers liked the reliable schedule and the personal service, and the business grew one ship and one customer at a time.

Capt. Whitmore's son Rick took over as President in 2001, and today the third generation of the family, Cathy Whitmore-Hayes, runs the day-to-day operation. We have three ships, a harbor tug, and a staff of 18 in our Mobile office — and we still answer our own phones.

Our vessels are operated in compliance with the ISM and ISPS Codes and are crewed by experienced officers and seamen, many of whom have sailed with us for more than fifteen years. Whitmore Marine & Shipping is licensed by the Federal Maritime Commission as an Ocean Transportation Intermediary and is a member of the Mobile Propeller Club.
